Take control of your skin!

Have you suffered with acne breakouts? Have you been to doctors only to be put on drugs? Is your skin now irritated from over doing it and you’re still not not seeing the results you want? Are you dealing with fine lines and/or wrinkles? Do you see brown patches or age spots when you look in the mirror? We can help!

As an Esthetician for 10 years now, I can say that I have a huge passion for skin. I especially have a love for helping those with acne. I had a pretty bad case myself in my early 20’s after having my 2 daughters. I remember feeling extremely embarrassed and didn’t want to be seen in public. I also witnessed my siblings and father deal with the awful scarring that occurred during their teens after years of picking and trying “everything” to clear up their skin. The stories they would tell of kids making fun of them were painful. I’ll never forget when my dad said “I remember wanting to just rip my skin off my face because I was so embarrassed and kids were so mean.”

After personally seeing a dermatologist and being put on what seemed like every drug/antibiotic they could give, I decided I had to figure out the real cause of what was going on.

The last straw was when I was put on accutane and my skin became so thin that if I cut myself on something, that wouldn’t normally be able to penetrate the skin, I would bleed uncontrollably. My bones ached, my nose bled constantly, my lips were chapped, and I was having my blood drawn every month to make sure I wasn’t pregnant (because the side effects would be terrible for a growing fetus). My dermatologist told me to use a mild cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVae, and to take the prescription drugs he prescribed to me. I was never advised by him of the potential side effects. He probably gave me a pamphlet or something, but never explained that I shouldn’t have any waxing done because my skin would lift. He didn’t tell me not to exfoliate or my skin would burn like crazy. I felt awful all the time. I then realized there had to be another way.

I decided to become an esthetician when I realized I could truly help people. During school I learned the benefits of using professional skin care products and having regular skincare treatments. There are so many amazing options out there these days to keep our skin healthy and youthful.

If you’re like a lot of people, when you hear the word “peel” you may think of something painful and may also be reminded of a certain scary scene from ‘Sex and the City’. Please remember that not all peels are the same. The peels you do in a doctors office will generally have a lot more downtime and sometimes even take weeks to heal. The peels you will have in an estheticians office will have a lot less downtime...and most of the time will have no downtime at all. Doing professional exfoliation treatments, such as a light to medium-depth peel, every month, will result in some beautiful skin. As we age, our cell renewal decreases by half. If you want to have fresh, healthy, vibrant-looking skin, you have to force the cells to turn over more frequently and reveal a healthy glow. Think of it as a treat, rather than a treatment. Any visible peeling is just a side effect, and the real peeling is happening on the cellular level.

We also have other options for a bit of a deeper exfoliation with no down time, such as our Hydra-Facial, Microdermabrasion, and Micro-Channeling. We offer some lighter enzyme peels which may only produce mild flaking, if anything, as well.

We offer treatments for every skin type and condition. When you come in for your treatment, our estheticians are trained to look at your skin and talk through your concerns. It’s very common to switch things up each time you come in. Everyone’s skin is different and our treatments will be determined, often times, based on the weather; whether it’s winter, summer, hot, cold, etc. We will take a look at what’s going on with your skin at that particular time. We will feel you out to see exactly what you’re wanting to change about your skin and together decide what treatment is best for you.

We always recommend the proper at home products to help you maintain the health of your skin when you leave. Our philosophy is this... if you’re going to invest in having awesome skincare treatments, you’ll want to invest in the best products for your skin as well. We touch your skin once a month typically...You touch your skin every day - hopefully twice a day when cleansing. The most important thing you can do is maintain a healthy regimen at home!

When it comes to cleansing your skin, it’s not so much about how you do it, but rather that you do it at all—and do it correctly. A good piece of advice that I received from a fellow esthetician - “If I’m staying home for the evening, I cleanse my face right after dinner instead of waiting until right before bed. That way, I won’t be too tired to wash my face thoroughly and apply all the necessary skincare products.”

As for how to cleanse, it’s really a personal preference and depends on your skin type and lifestyle. The products you use make such a huge difference. Using professional products ,sold by an esthetician, is so important. That way you’ll know you’re using what’s best for your skin type and condition. Be sure to always cleanse twice if wearing makeup. The first cleanse will take off the top layer of makeup, and the second cleanse will be able to penetrate into the pores for a deeper cleaning. I always recommend that you leave the cleanser on for a few minutes to allow those active ingredients to work. That way you’re not just washing all those helpful ingredients right down the sink. Maybe brush your teeth while it sits for a moment. We also recommend that you exfoliate with a professional exfoliant 2-3 times per week. No more than that or you’ll end up with irritation. Then follow up with your corrective treatments, moisturizer and sunscreen. Always remember thinnest to thickest when applying toners, serums, and moisturizers...and always finish with your broad spectrum sunscreen- SPF 30-45 as the final step in the morning to keep your skin protected.

Remember, it’s a process clearing up acne and other skin conditions. It will not happen overnight. It will take commitment from you and regular monthly, sometimes twice a month, treatments. Keep in mind that this is what estheticians have gone to school for. Be careful out there though, because there are some companies that use untrained people as their sales representatives, but that’s not fair to you and your skin. Each person’s skin is different and we Estheticians have the knowledge to help make real changes to your skin. It’s important that you follow our recommended steps for proper skin care but what’s more important is that you start taking care of your skin in the first place. The first step starts with you believing you can have healthy skin!
