Last week, we talked about taking care of your skin during the summer (and year round!) This week, we want to focus on hair care during the summer as we find that people often forget that the outdoors (sun, chlorine, sand, saltwater) can be rough on hair. The strands in your hair are coated with a protective hydrolipidic film, which breaks down over time. Chemical treatments, heat styling, swimming in chlorinated water can speed up this process, which is why by the end of summer hair tends to feel a bit fried.
Here are a few easy things to do to protect your hair during the summer months:
Soak Your Hair–Before you get in the pool, soak your hair in the shower. Your hair acts like a sponge, so instead of having it soak up all the chlorine and algaecide in the pool, instead give it a thorough rinse with clean water.
Au Naturel–In the summer, leave the straightener and blow dryer in the drawer. Let it air dry to prevent dehydration.
Wear a Hat–Or use a hair product with sunscreen in it! These will protect your hair and scalp from damaging UVA/UVB rays which will add to the fried feeling.
Coconut Oil–When you head to the beach, braid your hair and then put a little coconut oil on the ends. This will act as a protective layer between your hair and the saltwater.
Not as trendy, but wear a swim cap! These do great work at keeping the pool chemicals off your hair. However, if you wind up with slightly green hair at the end of summer, we can help. Our shampoo and style service can be modified to get rid of the green with ease!
Recently we brought in a new make-up line, Colorescience, to share with our clients. It takes a lot for us to recommend a product to our friends, but we are in love with this make-up line. It is 100% healthy for your skin and does not use any talc, dyes, fillers or alcohol. It won’t clog your pores or aggravate rosacea or acne.
One of our team members, Callie, recently applied it after having a facial treatment with extractions. Check out how great it looks on her skin and it’s perfectly healthy for it!
Want to see how it works? Check out this video, it’s incredible.
If you want to learn more about Colorescience, visit their website and then give us a call at 770-704-5614 to do a test run and find the products that are right for you!
I have always loved this poem by Lord Byron and when thinking about what to write for Kara, it just popped into my mind. It describes her personality to a T, she does walk in beauty and she is the first to see the good in people. She is kind and giving when so many are not. She tries each day to do good in the world through her relationships with her daughter, her family, and her clients.
We love her ready laugh, her smile, her sweet nature and we know you do too. Take a peek inside Kara’s world by reading below.
Have you ever had one of those awful, under the skin, painful pimples? The kind that just lurk there like some deep sea monster? Known as “blind pimples” because they have no head, they are always larger and more painful than the average pimple because the inflammation is deep down in the skin.
Did you know that there is a fast fix waiting at Practically Perfect? Seriously. The other day after finding one of these on my chin when I woke up, I stopped in at the spa to see if there was anything Lisa could do to make it not quite so Mount Vesuvius-like. She suggested we use the high frequency machine on it, which I had never tried before and it worked great.
But what exactly is it? Here a few things to know:
She’s SUPER-CALLIE-fragilisticexpialidocious and I’m sure she has never heard that before (forgive me, Callie.)
Ahem, anyway, I would love to introduce the newest member to the Practically Perfect family, Callie. She joins us as our new stylist and colour expert. You might have seen on our Facebook page the lovely style she did for Brittany’s homecoming, if not here it is:
We are so excited to have Callie join us and we know you will love her enthusiasm and sweet personality just as much as we do. If you haven’t yet made her acquaintance, read on to get the inside scoop.
A painful bikini wax ranks right up at the top of the my list of fears. Having someone nonchalantly ripping out the hairs from a very tender part of your body is no fun whatsoever. (Yeowww.) This is why it’s important to get all the information you need before dropping trou.
First off, don’t have a glass of wine before your appointment to take the edge off. Alcohol will actually work as a stimulant and tighten the pores, thus making it harder to pull out the hair. Also don’t shave before your appointment. The hair needs to be 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch long in order for the best results (it also is quicker and easier to remove.) Lastly don’t workout before or after your appointment. Sweat will make it harder to remove hair and the friction from working out after can cause a reaction. Wait at least 24-48 hours after your wax to work out.
Now let’s get to the Top 5 Questions to discuss before getting waxed:
The relationship between you and your stylist is an important one and it can take awhile to develop a friendship. Apart from husbands and best friends, your hairstylist usually knows the most about you and your life, work, and family. The salon should be a naturally supportive environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your ideas and learning how to achieve them. Your stylist should act as an extension of that hospitality and make you feel right at home.
In order to get to that point though, you will need to ask some questions first. Any stylist worth her salt should be able to answer these for you and if they can’t, get yourself a new one post haste!
So here they are, in no particular order, the top 5 questions to ask your stylist: Continue reading →
Most of our clients know that Sasha recently injured her knee and was unable to work for almost two months. What you might not know is that her clients, especially the men, waited for her to get back before getting a haircut. For two months. It was almost like this:
Seriously though, Sasha is one of the most talented, warmhearted, giving people we have ever had the pleasure of working with and her clients know it. She makes us laugh and reminds us to be a positive force in the world, even when things aren’t going our way.
When she isn’t at the spa, she loves spending time with her family and friends and at her church. Want to more about the lovely Sasha? Read on.
Anne has been their since the beginning. In the little white house on Main Street, running the front desk, taking care of clients, making sure everything goes smoothly. She is the steady heartbeat on which we all rely. She knows when we need supplies, when we need a hug, and when we need our space. She is enthusiastic about her work, her friends, her family, and her garden.
Practically Perfect would not be the same without Anne. It would be like trying to work without the use of your hands. She is the true spirit of hospitality and graciousness and we love her dearly.
The staff at Practically Perfect our so excited to introduce to you our newest team member and friend, Heather. While she hasn’t been at the spa for very long, she has been in the industry for a number of years. Her enthusiasm and the joy she takes in working are a perfect fit with our team. She always ask questions and takes initiative to make things run just a little bit more smoothly.
When she isn’t at the spa, she is busy raising her beautiful children, hanging out with her husband, running her own business and taking care of her extended family. We aren’t sure when she finds time to get a little shut-eye, but we are oh so glad she decided to include us in her world.
If you haven’t met her yet, this post will give you the inside scoop!
You know what’s frustrating? Being in your 30s (or 40s, or 50s) and thinking that you have finally put the bane of any teenager’s existence, acne, behind you. Then suddenly you wake up with several massive pimples and you are 13 all over again.
It really isn’t fair. At all. You know if you pick at it, it will just turn red and you will have to go to work with a beacon on your face. If you squeeze it, it will be that much more angry and might lead to a scar.
So what can you do about it? Well as Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So here are 4 easy ways to help prevent those pimples from becoming a reality.
